Keeping it simple

post brought to you by: dyson

bowerbirdsI love complex music. Beach Boys (Pet Sounds and Smile albums of course), Steely Dan, and even would throw Motown into the complex category. But every once in a while there are songs and bands that blow you away with their simplicity.

Bowerbirds are a band that I have recently been introduced to who can fall into the ’simple’ category. One song in particular ‘Northern Lights’ takes simple brilliance to the extreme. Drums, acoustic guitar, bass, brief piano lines, and great vocals. That’s it. Yet within two bars of hearing this song you already are in a mood.

There are many other countless bands and songs who have perfected this simple brilliance but this is the most recent on my mind / ears.

Also the recording geek in me can’t help but notice the subtle trick (and if by trick I mean BRILLIANT) method of throwing in the Organ in at the end of the song. When you hear that you immediately think ‘was that there the whole song?? Did I miss it??’ So what do you do? Go back and listen to the song again.

All I can say is enjoy. I hope ‘Northern Lights’ can have the same immediate impact on you as it has had on me. (Great wake up in the morning song too by the by)
