The Shape of the Earth

post brought to you by: dyson

shapeoftheearthI discovered The Shape of the Earth via music blogs and have put their album on repeat ever since. Is this proof that mainstream promotion of an album has a very small impact on discovering good new music? I’m not sure. But I didn’t hear about them first from Pitchfork or Rolling Stone…

From the first listen of the album I was sold. There’s something about them that is brutally honest. It speaks to you but doesn’t get forced on your ears. They clearly put their music first and worry about the rest second. This is one of the many reasons why I love them.

Gavin Bascom has this soothing way about him that makes you want to dive deeper and listen closer. His vocals sound effortless yet dead on. Doesn’t help to have a killer band to back that up either…

“This plastic beauty is somewhat obscene” – ‘An Audio Scribble (Rock Star Wannabe)‘ This is one of the lines on the album that sticks with me. They’re a band from California where beauty and style makes a big difference. I’m not saying they disregard style, but it’s great to hear an artist realize his surroundings and point them out in a very direct but non offensive way.

I am only a fan and a lot has already been said about The Shape of the Earth. Knox Road has a great piece and The Music Ninja has a great interview. So for all of you Boston fans, try to get them out here for a show!
