Castledoor – From LA to my soul

post brought to you by: dyson

The best recommendation services in the world can’t top the human recommendation model. It’s perfect. Someone knows a few bands you like, they calculate it in their heads, and BLAM, the next new love of your musical life is waiting for you to hit play on.

Many companies go out and try to analyze what we might like next based off what we have previously listened to. Some do a great job of this (Echo Nest, Pandora) But their algorithms are missing something big. EMOTION.

Music is a feeling, a passion. I might suggest to someone that a band has moved me to tears and will move them the same way. Over half of the time, I am right. (the other half I send them to the web…)

One lovely woman named Mary Broome is my shining example for this week’s episode. (I don’t have weekly episodes by the way. Just felt like the right random thing to say)

Before I go further into Castledoor, I think you need a taste of why I got so psyched when I found out Mary was dead on accurate with her recommendation.

This clip is from their last live performance as a sextet and I believe was the first song that gave me chills from their music. (AND they end in Nothing Compares 2 U!!)

The history of Castledoor is a long one and is now going through some adjustments. But I have no doubt the music they will produce in the future will lack anything it did in the past.  Every bit of music they have produced to this date has been nothing short of amazing. It’s pop, passion, rock, and pure Castledoor.

I came across the band right at the point when their lineup was adjusting. Their last recording effort was the “Flashlight” EP. I hate being that guy who analyzes lyrics and thinks about what they are meant to mean. But I can’t help but notice the first track “Burning Bridges on Purpose” and not put some relevance to them (even if they weren’t intentional).

“The past is in the ashes. So we gotta, gotta keep on moving”

That may have NO relevance to the band and their future, but come on now. Two members leave and they are still optimistic about the future of the band. Strange? Maybe, but it was a rare chance I could put lyrics together with a band’s current state of being and show off how dedicated they are towards the music.

I could go on and on about their music but it will be better suited if you just go out and do the investigation yourself. For now here is a track off of “Flashlight” and a link to go grab it (which I highly recommend). Also check out “Shouting At Mountains” while you’re on the Castledoor kick. This is the full album that serenades me at least once a week.
