The music and performances from of Montreal can at times be called “over the top”. And most of the time this is true. But describing it that way makes it sound like it’s too much to handle. Musically they’ve gone ahead and proven this wrong on their latest record ‘False Priest’.
Out of all of their records and EPs, I believe ‘False Priest’ to be the most palatable to listeners, yet never steering away from what makes of Montreal well, of Montreal. A lot of this seems to be due to the influence of Producer Jon Brion and the encouragement to make a sonically beautiful record that attacks you on both ends of the audio spectrum.
When Jon Brion is in the control room, you can always guarantee a quality record. And he didn’t disappoint with this one. Also I have to note that he was working on Punch Brothers ‘Antifogmatic’ in close time to this one. Amazing!
of Montreal managed to mix in pretty much every genre of music on ‘False Priest’. You get a little bit of soul, funk, R&B, pop, rock, and of Montreal (yes, that’s now a genre).
Surprising thing about the record is the banging bass. Put the record on a good system and you’ll be shocked. That bass is bumping more than the guys in shitty Hondas cranking their reggaeton. Songs like ‘Sex Karma’ show this off really well but keep the intricate bass lines you would expect from past tunes like ‘Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games’. (damn you Outback!)
Apparently ‘False Priest’ will be officially released on Sept 14th. If you’re lucky, you can still pre-order it from Polyvinyl here. I did and I’ve had a legit download of the record for days now with vinyl soon to arrive. Be sure to check out the single (which is the most unique sounding track off of the album) ‘Coquet Coquette’
